Just got the Mind States e-mail about the 2007 conference in Costa Rica. I saw that there is still some discrepancy as to whether it will be held in May or June. Not, that I think that my preferences should be the deciding factor, but as a single individual I place my vote for June (without even knowing what the factors are that are causing the indifference in the first place).

Re: Mind States 2007
Thu, October 19, 2006 - 7:54 AMFor what it is worth, keeping it away from Memorial Day weekend would allow, I think, for easier travel. It would also allow Burning Flipside (the burn event near Austin, TX) to have an opportunity for attendance.
Thus far I've missed numerous opportunities to attend Mind States (w/ Oaxaca being my sincerest regret). I do not intend to fail yet again. Looking forward to secured dates and pricing details so I can properly budget. -

Re: Mind States 2007
Sat, November 4, 2006 - 8:24 AMSeems okay. Just stay close to the group, like don't go wandering to Columbia or Bolivia to look for a little extra somethingsomething. Oaxaca is having some problems as of late I hear, too. Be wise, be safe, and as always have fun. ;) -

Re: Mind States 2007
Mon, November 13, 2006 - 4:15 PMBTW, there was a recent update on the Mind States website regarding Costa Rica. The conference will be six days at an eco-resort on a nature preserve of virgin rainforest. Will take place in June.
Pricing, lecturers, exact dates, and special events are not yet available but are noted as forthcoming.
I checked flights from DFW today and a non-stop on American is only $635. Hope conference tickets aren't TOO expensive. ;) -

Re: Mind States 2007
Wed, November 15, 2006 - 4:46 PMI received two e-mails today asking about dates for the event, which I am happy to say are now secured. Mind States Costa Rica will start in the afternoon of June 13, it run through the evening of the 17th, with a morning wrap-up session before check-out time on the 18th. Presenters will include:
Joe Coleman • apocalyptic visionary artist
Erik Davis • author of The Visionary State
Earth Erowid • co-founder of Erowid.org
Fire Erowid • co-founder of Erowid.org
Stanislav Grof • transpersonal psychologist
Jon Hanna • author of the Psychedelic Resource List
Liz McIntyre • co-author of Spychips
Alexander Shulgin • co-author of PIHKAL & TIHKAL
Ann Shulgin • co-author of PIHKAL & TIHKAL
Margaret Wertheim • author of The Pearly Gates of Cyberspace
One of the things that I am super-psyched about is the fact that Grof will be giving a presentation that deals with the art work of H.R. Giger as a reflection of the psyche of contemporary society. Grof is currently working on a book about Giger's art, and he may also be presenting a filmed interview that he did with Giger at the conference. After visiting the Giger museum in Basel earlier this year, I was totally blown away. Giger rocks, and there is no one better (save the man himself) who I could think of to discuss his work than Stan Grof.
I plan to get the Mind States web page updated with speaker biographies and ticket details by this Friday.

Re: Mind States 2007
Thu, November 16, 2006 - 5:58 PMJon,
I expect you are hugely busy with the setting of Mind States 2007 and other activities, but I was curious if you believe there will be many more presenters than those listed currently? You said presenters include those mentioned, but I was wondering if you might have any teasers about a great many more speakers being sought? The 2003 roster shows 30+ presenters, for example, so I imagine there are quite a few details to come?
Great to see Liz McIntyre as a guest, as liberty is a worthwhile topic for all of us. While I'm as interested in the psychedelic component of Mind States as the next enthusiast, it would be great to see some more speakers with a focus on TMS, L&S, neurofeedback, and general cognitive science. Evgeny Krupitsky would be incredible to hear, as would Stephen Larsen, Kristoff Koch, Richard Soutar, Dr. Roland Griffiths, Charles Grob, Dean Radin, etc. I'm personally particularly interested in any speakers who might offer a focus on psychedelics and cognition from a grounded, secular perspective.
Anyway, it's not really my place to come up with speakers. Just very enthused, that's all. -

Re: Mind States 2007
Fri, November 17, 2006 - 12:09 PMThe foreign conferences are smaller gatherings. Space is limited, both for attendees and presenters, due to the design of these events (which tend to max out at 100 or less, because of capacity issues with resorts). While they could be held at larger hotels, which would allow for more attendees (and hence, more presenters could be flown in), the intimate vibe of a smaller extended event allows more one-on-one time with the presenters and other attendees. So it is a different kind of thing than the 30+ presenters, and LONG days of non-stop talks at the U.S.-based conferences.
In the past, the foreign conferences have usually had 9 or 10 presenters at them. While there it is unlikely that there will be "many more" presenters listed, we did have a recent addition of Mark Pesce, who is one of my all-time favorite speakers. The current line-up and speaker bios are now listed at the web site. And I still have a couple of tricks up my sleeve that have not yet been announced. But primarily, the line-up is "complete" as it stands.
Thanks for the suggestion of potential future speakers--I am always eager to hear this sort of feedback, and I share your appreciation for a grounded, secular, scientific perspective. I'm also super-psyched about Liz McIntyre speaking--her book Spychips is a great wake-up call.

Mon, November 20, 2006 - 4:03 PMWhat about a piece on Technology and Trancendence: Timothy Leary, wrapping up the last mind states? I'd be willing to work on one if someone has an old Apple Powerbook G4, that they'd like to donate. It's been in my head for a few months, now. Any interest?

Re: Mind States 2007
Tue, December 26, 2006 - 11:00 AMI'm so there. I know it'll be great. The people, local, and the subject matter.
I've never really mentioned before, but my first Mind States back in SF was quite the eye opener. I'm looking forward to another full 360 view across all dimensions. -

Re: Mind States 2007
Thu, December 28, 2006 - 7:43 AMSo $1400 for tix (I'll save $350/month for four months) and approx. $600-$650 for the plane ticket. As this will be my first MS conf, I was wondering how much extra money I should bring? I'd like to do activities while I am there, and have money for drinks.... $300 extra seem reasonable? -

Re: Mind States 2007
Thu, December 28, 2006 - 3:54 PMMy friend recommended to bring $1000 extra and to plan to stay for awhile(he owns a lodge/resort/thingee and is looking for people who want to stay and work, if you are interested)... :)

Re: Mind States 2007
Thu, January 4, 2007 - 4:59 PMThe Mind States Costa Rica conference will be held in Horquetas of Sarapiqui, on the north region of Costa Rica, about 1 hour and 15 minutes from downtown San Jose. Flying into San Jose and getting a bus to Horquetas is a good approach.
As far as how much extra money to bring with you, this will vary depending on how many additional activities or travel you wanted to get done while in Costa Rica. If it is primarily just a couple of day trips, and maybe a zip-line canopy jaunt, plus any alcohol and lodgings for traveling on non-conference days, it seems to me like this could be covered very easily for under $500. If more extensive travel is in your plans, with more night's stays at hotels, it could go higher than that. A good way to plan out how much money you think that you might need is to purchase a Costa Rica guidebook (most such books provide a range of prices for various locals and activities). While Costa Rica is not as inexpensive as Jamaica or Mexico, deals can still be had and there are cheap, reasonable places to stay while traveling. Food and drinks are generally inexpensive as well.

Re: Mind States 2007
Wed, January 10, 2007 - 6:22 AMHey, the site says on June 13th there will be an "early afternoon" introductory session or something. Looks like from New England, the earliest the plane will arrive in San Jose at 1:23pm. I only checked with orbitz.com so don't kill me if I'm wrong. So a ballpark two hours later is when I'd get to the resort. Thats 3:30pm. Seems kinda late for "early afternoon".... Should I be looking to arrive the previous day? Please advise. Thanks Jon. -

Re: Mind States 2007
Wed, January 10, 2007 - 1:44 PMI don't actually have the schedule set yet. I was thinking about starting things off at around 2:00 pm or 3:00 pm; maybe the later choice is better, as it is true that folks will need some travel time from the airport, since it is about 1.5 hours to the resort (or maybe a little less). Perhaps I should instead start at around 3:30 pm or 4:00 pm.
The introductory session is basically me providing some data on Costa Rica in general and the resort in particular, and explaining how the schedule will run; then the floor is open for each attendee to speak for about two minutes. Attendee introductions should last for 2-3 hours, depending on the number of attendees and how many people want to say something about themselves (which is in no way required, but which most people do, and which is--I think--one of the highlights of the conference, since so many interesting folks are in attendence). Attendees are free to use the audio/visual equipment, if they want to project something in PowerPoint, for example. We had a lot of amazing short presentations at the Oaxaca conference, and this is a great way to get to know a bit more about the folks who are there.
Some people will undoubtedly feel more comfortable arriving a day earlier (and accomodations for that can be arranged directly through the resort). Many of the presenters will be getting there a day earlier.
Thanks for the question.

Re: Mind States 2007
Thu, February 15, 2007 - 7:04 AMI was just thinking, last night....how about a presentation by Kat Harrison? I think she would be an excellent presenter. Have you considered approaching her about this, Jon? Anyone else interested in Kat presenting/speaking?

Re: Mind States 2007
Tue, May 1, 2007 - 8:15 AMHey Jon,
Do you have the exact name and (hopefully) website for the resort? I'd like to call them and get prices for single days, and compare whether or not my first night will be spent in San Jose. I think I am going to spend my first night there since I will be spending the rest of the time at the resort and I'd like to see as much as possible while there... -
-
Re: Mind States 2007
Wed, May 2, 2007 - 11:54 AMThe discounted rate (if you mention the conference) for a single room at the resort should be $118. They can be contacted through their web site at www.suenoazulresort.com/home.htm There are undoubtedly cheaper digs in San Jose; I recommend picking up a traveler's guide book to Costa Rica, to suss out potential places of interest to visit, hotels, etc.

Re: Mind States 2007
Sun, May 6, 2007 - 7:59 PMYes, I was amazed that my most recent ticket purchase last week for Sheelo (who will be running the morning Holotropic Breathwork sessions) from San Francisco was only $479. This is nearly $200 less than tickets were running a month or two ago, and is great news for folks who want to attend the event but have not yet gotten their transportation. I imagine that flights WILL go up in price again though, as the date draws closer. :-)

Re: Mind States 2007
Wed, May 30, 2007 - 11:35 AMHey everyone, as a suggestion, maybe people should post the flight numbers and airlines for their flights, that way as a group we can figure out who is coming on what flight, and possibly arrange to sit together or possibly meet up in San Jose to split the cost of getting to the resort. Cause when I show up I'm pretty much not going to know whats going on, and I will just be having to figure it out. Which I am totally prepared to do. But it would be kinda nice to share that part of the experience with at least one other person, you know, the "we just got here so now let's figure it out and make our way to the resort" type of feeling. All I am saying is it is nice to have a buddy when going to another country for the first time. :)
Also, in case you haven't checked the site recently, Tommy Thomas from the Ark Herb Farm, an ethnobotanical garden outside of San Jose, is offering tours of the farm probably after the conference, so I figured it would be good to stay probably two days after the conference ends, to explore San Jose a little more and see that farm. Sounds like an impressive place. -

Re: Mind States 2007
Wed, May 30, 2007 - 12:45 PMHey Joshua,
I'm curious what day you are getting in. If it is the 13th, there is a shuttle from the airport (see recent e-mail from Jon - not the very latest one) to the resort that Jon has set up. So, if you are getting in on the 13th it should be no problem to catch a ride with others. I personally am getting in on the 11th and am just grabbing a ride to the airport on the 13th to catch the shuttle. If you're getting in early and heading straight to the resort, though, that is a different matter. -

Re: Mind States 2007
Thu, May 31, 2007 - 8:21 AMHey thanks for the information Kevin. Turns out my post was somewhat premature. There is a document that gets sent to you with the all the pertinent details, but since that information only matters if you are coming, it was only sent to those that bought tickets.
Kevin I will let you know when I am getting there. I can't show up early as I have an important work event that I have to attend until at least noon on the 12th. That should be me in San Jose around 8pm that night. How many of you are going to stay for a couple days after the conf? That is the only extra time I will be able to do.
